Vibe coding is changing how software gets built. Here's what it is, how it works, and where to learn it in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The short version
Vibe coding is a way of building software where you describe what you want in plain English — and AI writes the code for you. No syntax memorization. No years of bootcamps. You think, you describe, AI builds.
The term was coined by Andrej Karpathy (co-founder of OpenAI, former AI Director at Tesla) in February 2025. He described it as "fully giving in to the vibes" — trusting AI to handle the implementation while you focus on what to build and why.
How vibe coding actually works
Instead of opening a blank code editor and writing JavaScript line by line, you open an AI-powered tool and type something like: "Build me a task manager with drag-and-drop, due dates, and a dark mode toggle." The AI generates a fully working application — HTML, CSS, JavaScript, database connections, the whole thing.
You review the output, refine it ("make the sidebar narrower," "add a search bar," "change the color scheme"), and iterate. Each cycle takes seconds instead of hours. A project that might take a traditional developer two weeks can ship in an afternoon.
Traditional coding
Learn syntax → write code → debug → test → deploy. Months of learning before you ship anything real. High barrier to entry.
Vibe coding
Describe intent → AI generates code → refine → ship. Build working apps on day one. Focus on ideas, not semicolons.

Milwaukee has always been a builder city — beer, motorcycles, manufacturing. Vibe coding fits that DNA. It's not about credentialed engineers from Stanford. It's about regular people with ideas who want to build things that work.
The Milwaukee Vibe Coder Society runs weekly build sessions where members learn vibe coding hands-on. No lectures, no slides — you show up with a laptop, pick a project, and build. Experienced members help newcomers. Everyone ships something.
